MEETING OF COUNCIL. REPORT ON HIGHWAYS. The monthly meeting of tho Kairanga County Council was held to-day, Or. D. Collis presiding. Also present were Crs. Jos. Batchelar, W. R. Hopcroft, T. D. Lynch, W. G. Shannon, J. Smith, F. J. Russell, N. P. Nielsen and M. W. Voss. CORRESPONDENCE. The Public Works Department asked in a letter when the metal pit at Fitzherbert, which was being acquired by the council, would be open, as metal was required for No. 60 highway reconstruction work. The department also suggested that the metal should be made available free of royalty. The matter was held over until the next meeting. The Town Planning Institute of New Zealand wrote asking the council to join the institute. —Received. Mr E. Kensington wrote asking if he could lease an unformed portion of Bunnythorpe Road at Kelvin Grove, the area being about half an acre.Left in the hands of Cr. Smith and the engineer, with power to act. The city traffic manager stated that, under present circumstances the telegraph engineer had to secure a separate permit on each occasion that long poles were taken into the country, and it had been suggested that the five neighbouring counties should give tne city traffic department permission to issue the permits so as to avoid inconvenience.—Granted. . , The chairman was appointed to tne electoral committee of the Feuding Agricultural High School. Mr J. Knight is the present local authorities representative on the board of managers. i. In response to a request from tne Railway Department, it was decided to give every co-operation in keeping loose metal off railway crossings. The Feilding Borough Council wrote correcting the impression that there was now no public pound m 1' eliding. There was, stated tho letter, a new pound in Lethbridge Street. Received. , The health inspector reported that five cases of infectious diseases had been notified in the county—two or poliomyelitis and one each of scarlet fever, diphtheria, and tuberculosis. Lack of adequate drainage at the Milson settlement had caused some concern, the report added, and a comprehensive scheme to link up with the city drainage was urged.—The report was received. Tho' Public Works Department advised that warning signs had been erected at the construction works on No. 60 highway, but some motorists were ignoring them. —Received. The Feilding and District Road Transport Alliance wrote asking for a variation of loads allowed under road classifications as follows: —Class IV, five tons; Class 111, seven tons. The present limits, it was stated, were proving very restrictive and had a big effect on transport charges.—lt was decided to take no action. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £6092 6s lid.

The City Council was granted permission to increase the size of the ga6 mains leading to Massey College, in the county area. The ranger reported that 68 head of stock had been found straying on county roads. It was decided to vote £lO to the Garrison Band’s new instrument fund.

The following property transfers were approved:—Taonui Riding; W. W. Cruden to T. F. Conway, 77 acres 3 roods 23.6 perches. Mangaono Riding: Jos. Whittle to Mrs E. A. Tantrum, 4 acres 2 roods 39 perches; Mrs trum, 40 acres 2 roods 39 perches ; Mrs acres. Fitzherbert Riding: J. J. Knight to A. It. Mackie, 164 acres; J. C. Croad to R. E. Harrison, 264 acres; J. C. Croad to R. E. Harrison, 199 acres 2 roods. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The engineer (Mr L. C. Pickering) reported as follows : —Taonui Riding : Most of the month I have been occupied with the survey of LongburnRongotea Road in connection with the proposed reconstruction, and samples of aggregates have been forwarded to the Public Works Department, Wellington, for analysis and report?; prior to tho compilation of specifications. The banking completed 'eighteen months ago has been strengthened at all weak places, and side drains are being deepened to facilitate the discharge of surface water. The concrete culvert on Gillespie’s Line, over Whiskey Creek, subsided about eighteen inches on one side and, being dangerous to the travelling public, has been closed and a temporary bridge erected to carry local traffic until an investigation has been made and a decision arrived at regarding its replacement. The truck and motor grader have been maintaining road surfaces generally. Footpaths and channels on Maxwell’s Line have been cleaned of weeds. Mangaone Riding : A set of flinch concrete pipes has been put across Newbury Line opposite Mr Knight’s to facilitate the discharge of surface water during heavy downpours. Carting out of metal from the Mangaone Stream to heaps has been proceeded with as opportunity has permitted. Screening of metal has been carried out at James’s Line pit and trucks have been using this metal for patching. The truck has been metalling roads requiring attention and the motor grader has been maintaining road surfaces with the multiple blade attachment. Fit/herbcrt Riding: Stripping of Sc'ott’s pit at Aokautere has been commenced and the spoil used in improving the superelevation of corners in this locality. Practically all the available metal from No. 4 Line pit has been carted to dumps for use on No. 60 highway. Fitzherbert East Road has been metalled, for two miles with piiTmetal. (he Linton truck has been concentrating on the metalling of by-roads, and practically all have been completed. The motor grader has been over the main roads „on]y.
