THE SPRINGBOKS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln Saturday’s “Standard” in reply to “Wager” you say- that it was stated in the “Standard” that the South Africans pronounce the final syllable “buk” and not “bok.” Having lived in South Africa for years may I state that the word “bok” is Dutch for our English word “buck,” and “Springbok” which is an African deer is always pronounced as spelt, “bok” not “buk.”—l am, etc., D. It was stated prior to tire match at Auckland, when the Springbok tour opened, on the authority of Messrs Day and do Viiliers, the manager and vice-manager respectively' of the tourists, that the name was pronounced “Springbuk” and not “Springbok.”
