LIMITED POWERS.

SUPPRESSION OF NAME. CASE UNDER REGULATIONS. Comment that he had no power to prevent the publication of a defendant’s name in a case brought under a clause in certain Government regulations, which provides for no penalty other than a fine, was made by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day. Adding that the case did not come within the scope of the ordinary penal statutes, the Magistrate said he had no power to order the suppression of the name. This power oxisted only where the offence carried the liability of imprisonment on indictment, or otherwise.
