DEBATING SOCIETY.
ELOCUTION AND SPEECHES. The Palmerston North Debating Society held its weekly meeting last evening, the first part' of the programme being taken up with a selection from a favourite poet. The participants were as follow : Mr G■ Shaw, ‘‘Ella "Wheeler AN ilcox” ; Miss E. Christian. “Rupert Brooke”; Mr A. Philpot. “Thomas Bracken.” Mr T. C. Watson acted as adjudicator and awarded the Murray Cup to Miss Christian. Impromptu speeches were given as follow: —Mr R. Allison, “The Sea Today and Before”; Air H. G. Mills, “Discipline”; Mr S. Laurenaon, “Should the Truth Always be Told?” ; Air Robertson. “Trees.” The main debate was; “That Freedom is Dwindling.” The following members took part: Air T.Kilgour (leader), Aliss Bird. All 1 H. King; Air AlcPhee (leader). Aiks McGrath. Airs Christian. The honours went to the negative and the S. Al. Carlton Medal was won by Aliss AlcGratli. Air J. A. Edwards acted as adjudicator, criticising each speaker, and was accorded a vote of thanks.
