The Morning Post’s Johannesburg correspondent says: “Sir John Simon s reply to a question in the House ot Commons promising to inquire if the Union had made a proposal to sterilise a quantity of gold created a new gold scare, but it later abated upon the Minister of the Interior (Mr J. H. Hofmeyr) stating in Parliament that the Government considers a limitation on the gold output preposterous because it would not .alter the world position. in which hoarding is the greatest trouble. A number of experts are urging a return to gold coinage as a way out of the impasse.
