LAST TRACES GO.
OLD FITZHERBERT BRIDGE. DEMOLITION JOB ENDS. Demolition operations which had been in progress since Inst October ended this week, when the last timbers were removed front the old Fitzherbert bridge, which has been dismantled section by section during the last few months. Not a vestige now remains of the familiar old landmark, which had withstood the storms and floods of lualf a century. Practically unnoticed under the shadow of the imposing new bridge, its passing was of rather an inconsequential nature, but it had ties of sentiment lor many old settlers who knew it when the first of its sturdy spans were laid. Nearly. 250,000 feet of sound ironbark and totara timber, the latter originally pit-sawn at Aokautere and rafted down to the site, have been obtained from the demolished structure. Its strong concrete supporting cylinders have been blasted away down to river-bed level. The site ol what was once the southern gateway to Palmerston North received its Aural inspection this morning bv the city engineer (Mr J. R. lluglies). and district engineer for the Public Works Department (Mr A. It. Acheson).
