COST OF WHITEWASH.
RECEIVED BY RED FLAG. WINE OF SOCIALISM WATERED. LONDON, April 8. The House of Commons, by 281 votes to 124, to-day rejected a motion by Mr Windsor, Labour member for Bethnal Green, who sought a declaration that the workers’ destitution was due to the present economic and industrial system, and that the only remedy was the democratic control of industries and banks.
Lieutenant-Colonel Spender Clay (Con.) said that the nation’s welibeing depended on the maintenance of the present system. Everybody’s cooperation was necessary to assist in recovering from the trade depression and to place Britain on a better competitive footing in the world’s markets. Sir Alfred Mond (Lib.) declared that the red wine of Socialism had been watered, and the Bed Flag had received a coat of whitewash. It was futile to imagine that a redistribution of wealth would improve the position. Instead of that, they must increaso tho total wealth.
