HINDENBURG’S CHANCES.
FOR GERMAN PRESIDENCY. LONDON, April 8. The negotiations preceding von Rindenburg’s acceptance of nomination for the German presidency emphasise tlio straits to which the Right parties have been reduced in order to nominate a candidate who would have a reasonable prospect of approaching the. combined Republican vote lor Marx.
The Berlin correspondent of the Times says: “Only a few hours before accepting, Hindenburg telegraphed that, on account of his age, lie could not undertake the Presidential responsibilities, and recommending a patriotic vote in favour of Jarres. “The Nationalists themselves had decided against bringing the old national hero into politics, but when they realised that to fight under Jarres’s banner was to champion a lost cause they dropped him with scant courtesy, and exercised further pressure on Hindenburg, who finally consented.
“It is difficult to estimate his chances. It is said that ho may prove a national candidate, uniting wide elements on non-party grounds, and even drawing support from the Centre Democrats. Probably it would he more correct to say that the Nationalists have grossly over-estimated the field-marshal's post-war popularity.”
