Many weeks apo, three hundred Bushmen, failing to got included in Iho South African contingents, cabled in tho name of their representative, Sir William McMillan, offeriug their services direct to tho Imperial authorities. Tho men hung about tho city for weeks but no reply came.
It now transpires that Lord Kitchener replied that Lord Tullibardino would be glad to accept them for tho Scottish. Horso.
Tho postal department sent the reply to Sir William McMillan, at Melbourne-, and ho being unawaro of the Sydney movement, and thinking tho request wa3 for inoro men, handed it to tho Minister for Defence, Sir .1. Forrest.
Tho latter informed Lord Kitchener that tho Government was raising its own eoEtingents, and was unable to reeruiD others.
On May 10th Lord Tullibardino cabled urging tho despatch of the men. This also went wrong, and n reply was sent: Federal Government cau do nothing in tho matter of Lord Tuliibardino'a proposal.
Tho 300 wero thus robbed of a second chanco of going to the front.
The Governor has received the following message from ihe ('usually Department nt Capetown :— Death from pneumonia at Newcastle, i)'M2 Corporal FogaWy; dangerously ill a' Wakkerstfoin, 0077 Patrick Lee and (i 057 \\ illiam Grant, from injuries received at Newcastle ;' Sergeant T. Turnbull, and BUUO D. Baker,"both from enteric fever.
