Mako.uveka, Juno 9. Despite the fact that it was not an otlicial opening, fully 400 people witnessed the lirst engino crossing the gnat Maliohino viaduct this afternoon. Shortly after 1 o'clock, an cu"ine, drawing 12 trucks of ballast, was drawn «P at tho Ohingaiti sido of the viaduct. Un tho trucks wcro fully sixty workmen and m addition there was au empty truck, filled with public works officials, nowspapor reporters, and some 20 ladies.
At a tjivon signal by tho ongineer, Mr I'nißer, iho preliminary trials took place, and the structure was severely tested with a dead weißht of fully 150 tons, mis heavy lond pas.-oa mid re-pas^d halt a dozon times. Those in eJwu-o of this massivo structure were thorou«hly satisfied with tho result, and after examination found everything solid and secure, notwithstanding tho grout hei"ht of 242 .feet and 700 feet across.
'flic engineers, Messrs Cook, Fraser, and Snadden. each camo in for a great ovation, tho crowd waving and cheering on tho tram's arrival at tho Wellington side.
