A BISHOP ON THE WAR.

The Bishop of Newcastle, in his opening address to the Synod, said as in the natural world, volcanoes and storms were instrumental in doing good, so war —hateful and horrible though it be—was a rough agent to realise the same end. The Transvaal struggle resolved itself into a question of the survival of the fittest.
