The Minister of Public Works has informed Mr Smith, that the plans and specifications for the Manawatu line are m a forward state, and tenders will be called for the work m a week or two. A petition, involving a question of large importance was considered this inorninu; by the Waste Lands Committee, the prayer of: those who are practically Crown tenants, and who leased lands m yeajrs gone by, when the prices of produce were double of what they are today. These people find it impossible to carry out their agreement and ask ,f or a reduction, or to be allowed to throw up their sections and again compete for them at present rates. Mr Wilson's bill, which cuts off all lying south of the Manawatu f »om the Wanganui Educatien district, passed its second reading last night. Mr Bryce asked if it was also intended to exclude Fox^oa. ;. He had received , a telegram from the Seoretary of the Education Board, protesting against such an action as proposed. Mr Wilson admitted that such an action was contemplated, but said that it would be a question for the House to consider. The claims of the old soldiers will be considered by the Wastes Lands Committee this week.
