MESSRS F. E. JACKSON AND CO.'S LONDON AGENTS' REPORT.
14, Finsbury Circns, London, Feb. 25th, 1886. •■ I Our latest advices from New Zealand are to the 13 th January from Wellington and Christchurch, received per Riiapehu on the 22nd instant,'and from Australia to the] l3th January from Sydney, and 14th January from Melbourne received via Brindisi also on the 22nd instant. Wool.— The sales which commenced on the 19th January and closed on the 13th inst have proved very disappointin":. The cause is doubtless to be found m the bad state of trade both at Home and m the colonies, and m the case of Australia m the tender waste condition of the wool owing to the drought. Superior greasy merino wool has found a demand from America, and the finer grades of New Zealand cross-bred were well competed for at the commencement of the sales, but all dropped m value towards the end, and closed at worst prices. The next sales are to commence on the 23rd March, the quantity being limited to 275,000 bales. Tallow.— The market has declined week by week until the sale of the 19th instant, when prices were ajtrifle firmer for middling assortments. We cannot look for any material improvement whilst ■stocks remain ho heavy both here and on the Continent. We now quote, fine mutton 25s to 25s 6d, fair to good 23s to 255, fine beef, 245, fair to good 22s to 235, in-; ferior m proportion. Present stock of Anstralasian m first hands is about 19,000 casks. Hides and Leather. — Supplies of hides i continue plentiful, and with small busi- ' ness prices have receded Jd. Quotations are Ist heavies 4s& to ssd, Ist light 4fd to sd, cows 4£d to. 4fd, with seconds m proportion. Present stock m first hands is about 31,000 hides. Leather has been, ' m goo J demand and has brought very full prices, say from 9Jd to 11-J.d per pounds Bazils from. 7d to . I3jd per pound. • • Frozen Meat, — Since our last report the Coptic and Buapehu have arrived from New Zealand. The market has not been overburdened with supplies, and the weather has been favourable ; prices have consequently been maintained, and s|d continues to be obtained for prime' sheep ; as much as ssd was paid, on a< day when very few carcases were on offer; with moderate supplies we pate a steady demand of s£d for . good sheep.and 7d to 7£d ; for lambs. v : ■ Grain.—^The corn markets m the country are underselling the London market, and stagnation prevails, there is, however, a fair demand for New Zealand wheat. The tirade for cargoes is very limited, New Zealand wheat is quoted 32s to 34s per 4961 bex granary, oats* 3os to 32s 6d per 384ftn. Beans 35s to 365. per 504ft>3. Superfine Australian flour 24s to 265, New Zealand 20s to 23s per 280R>s. ! The weather during the pastj four weeks has been cold, foggy, and damp, without much rain, but on the whole seasonable. Easterly winds, witli frosts at night, are keeping back vegetation. Johnston & Allsup. Wellington markets*
