(UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION?) Auckland, Thursday; At the inquest on the body of Arthur Hemmett, a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. There, was no foundation for the allegations that death was caused by exposure or starvation. Councillor W. G. Connolly died suddenly at his residence to-day, it is believed from the bursting of a blood vessel. Tho Penguin, for the South, took three boxes containing gold, valued at £14,638, for transhipment to the Aonuigi, for London. The Harbour Board have decided to ask the authority of Parliament for raising a £200,000 loan. Rear-Admiral Knorr and thirty officers of the German squadron were entertained at the Northern Club to-night. The toast of the Queen and Emperor were drunk enthusiastically, and the speeches were *£ tbe most cordial character. Messrs McArthur and Co's case, respecting disputed property tax valuation, cumo on again to-day. Mhe Government valuation of £30,800 was sustained, a decision which the firm accepted. The Property Tax Commi* eioncr will rtcommend the Governor-in Council to take over the property at the firm's original valuation £20,800, with 10 per cent added. Hoketika, Thursday. Mr Matthew Burnett's temperance mission met with most pronounced success. Six hundred and twenty-six persons have already joined. He is now lecturing m the country district?. Dunedin, Thursday. ! A petition was received by the Presbytery to-day from a number of persons who had acceded from the: < church, because of the introduction of instrumental music, and had formed a new congregation. They asked to be admitted into the Presbytery as a congregation, provided provisibn was made against the introduction of instrumental music. Consideration was deferred.
