POLITICAL NEWS.
The Otago Daily Times of Friday, m an editorial deprecating the resignation of or turning-out of the Ministry, flatters thb gentlemen now iv office with some excessively complimentary remarks. Our contemporary ; says :— <: Everything is working for the best. It would be a great mistake to turn the Ministry out next session if they behave themselves m the meantime and are kept from kicking over the traces. They are a more plastic Administration thau we could easily get elsewhere ; they are distrusted, and therefore a sharp eye is kept for their mistakes, jobbery, and extravagance. We could not easily do better for a stop-gap, and their retention affords an excellent opportunity for carrying out retrenchment m the administratiou without involving it with the question of Public Works policy or making it a party questiou." This is very well put. It just means that they are so effectually muzzled that they cannot do much harm, aud therefore they may as well hold their positions for another session m order to save the cost and trouble of an election. It is certainly a very honorable position for a Government to be placed m, but they thoroughly merit such a distinction.
