Yesterday evening Mrs Croft was acquitted. on a charge of having set fire to her house, with intent to defraud the Colonial Insurance Company. It was stated m evidence that the accused had advised the wife of tue landlord of the house to get it insured, as she did not intend to pay any more insurance premiums. A number of articles belonging to the accused had also beeu found secreted m a shed after the fire. For the defence, it was shown that ill-feeling existed between the accused and the wife of the landlord. To-day a verdict was given for defendant m the. libel case brought against the Rev Seth Smith by a young man named Moor. The action arose out of a document sent to a Committee of the Blue Ribbon Army, stating that the prosecutor was m the habit of frequenting brothels. The jury found that the defendant was not guilty of publishing the libel, and that the alleged libel was true
