Resurgam !

' The following' appears hi the first issue of the Rationalist after its temporary suspension of ' publication :-^-Twice m its brief but eventful career of twentyseven weeks has the Rationalist been compelled ito- cease publication 0 (Twice m this short period have its opponents : sent forth the shrill scream of premature jubilation. Twice have, its enemies, m that time, accorded the Rationalist the rights of sepulture ere it was really dead. What then? What though the path be choked with briars, shall that make ah end of endeavour and of progress? If there was no such word as fail, its antithesis, success, would have no meaning. But the Rationalist has never never failed m the real sense of that word. Its short life, .heretofore, hae been one struggle for existence. Excepting; many kindnesses^ .rpce^iyed \ at -the ■ "hands of individual Freethinkers, it has. had nearly everything' against it. It has. baen assailed by numerous enemies with abuse and underhand misrepresentation, and not a few of tliese-f oes have assumed the guise of friends.: Itlras had to fight" bigotry and prejudice, but worst of all it'nas had to suffer from scanty funds, and. insufficient capital. »Bat; ,with all these, no journal ever issued m New Zealand that attained the circulatioii of the Rationalist eyev started with less money or had more difficulties to contend against.
