THE BENEFITS OF FREE TRADE.
While various colonial cities are suffering from the enervating effects of depression m trade Melbourne is enjoying undiminished prosperity, and this too m spite of the enormous influx of immigrants from other colonies where business is less active and employment h scarce. A correspondent of a northern exchange writes : — " As the influx has now been going on for several weeks, and all the. new arrivals have come with the intention of permanently settling here, it has been the means of sustaining the land fever ; because cottages m the imme diate neighbourhood of the city find tenants as soon as they are built, and thus speculators are encouraged to go further afield and spread their purchases of building allotments over a still wider area. So far as I can learn, the new comers have been readily absorbed, and the labour market appears to be m a buoyant condition. The building trades are especially active, and the brickraakere have more orders than they can execute for some time to come. Architects and auctioneers are wonderfully busy, although I am confidently informed by some of the latter that the Saturday land sales are beginning to drag. Presently, perhaps, the tide of speculation will begin to ebb."
