Pohangina Stone.
DISCOVERY OF GOLD.
The following letter from Mr Wolff of the Thames has been handed to the Slor for publication : — > Mr W. Carthew Sir,— l herewith beg to furnish you with the result of assays of stone left with me last wetk : — No. 1. Dtcimal 003 ; bullion 9dwt. 19gr. No. 2. Decimal 007 ; bullion loz. 4dwt. 20sr. per ton of ore. No. 1. I did not part for it would require more than the above all gold to be payable, as it is not, no further trouble is necessary. No. 2. On parting gave ldwt 12gr of gold at M per ounce, and lOdwfc Bgr a<< 4s per ft to the ton ; total value, £1 9s : Id. You will perceive by this that No. 2 is not good enough. Trusting that some samples you intend forwarding to me may give- results of a more promising! nature than the above have done.— l am, &c, 8.. Wolff. Coroiaandel, December Bth, 1895. The following telegram has also been • handed to us for publication : — D. H. Macarthur, M.H.R., Peilding, Sir, — Stone has been assayed and analysed. No. 1. — Contains a small trace of gold unweightable. No. 2. — Seventeen grains of gold per ton. I am disappointed with the stone. — I am &C.| J. A. Black. Coromandal, Dec. 15, 1885.
The above telegram shows conclusive ly if further proof was needed, that there is gold m the Pohangina stone. It must be remembered that the stone submitted is from no defined reef, but merely stuff picked up some years ago by men who were prospecting, not for gold but for coal. It would too much to expect that the best stone m the, district had been thus selected, and further search will, I have no doubt, result m getting a payable reef or reefs. The stone referred to above as running I7e;r to the ton was taken from the same heap as that tested by Mr Wolff, with a result of loz 4dwt 20gr of bullion, that is mixed gold and silver. D. H. Macarthur.
