THE BRIDGE AT THE LOWER GORGE FERRY.
A Wellixgton correspondent informs, us that estimates for roads and bridges construction, that is on all pledged works, represent. .£1 66.000, and for works promised .£50,000. We should say that it will be lout of the latter sum that the expenditure ' for the bridge at the Lower (Jorge Ferry will probably be taken!' It will be remembered that £2,000 was previously voted for this work, which was expended m timber, which has been stacked on the proposed site ever since. It is probable that our member has reminded Ministers of their promise to make further advances, and has been successful m his representations. The bridge will be a great boon to all this district, as well as to the residents of Woodville. We Understand that a commencement will be made very shortly, arid with the sum available (the exact amount of which we have not accurately ascertained^) substantial progress should speedily be made m the work of erection. It will be a grandday for Manawatu when a bridge will be substituted for the present ferry, with its expense and unavoidable drawback to traffic and progress, :'■-. v
