[ As stated m our telegrams a few days ago, the barmaid prohibition clause m the new Victorian Licensing Act was thrown out by a single vote, and this result is Siiid to be m some measure due to Mr G. A. Sala's eloquent and able defence of the barmaids, m a letter written by him on the subject while m Melbourne. The Cromwell paper ■jecord.s the death of Mrs M'Kinley, who, as Mrs Notunin, was tho first white woman to set font m the Otago Central district, having settled at Wanaka m 1860. Stratford-on-Avon, which has most interesting historical associations, and, as the burial-place of Shakespeare, is the object of universal interest. The estimated cost of the work is £12.000.
