Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. FRIDAY, OCTOBER. 2, 1885. SUBSIDIES TO LOCAL BODIES.

Undkr *' The Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, 1885," the Borough of Palmerston North is entitled to a subsidy on rates to be collected for the current year, the advance now available being equivalent to about O&850. The Manawatu Koad Board is also entitled to a subsidy, the advance now available on its behalf being equivalent to three-fourths of £500, or £2>15. We learn that the necessary statutory declarations will be made and signed by His Worship the Major and the Chairman of the Road Board respectively, and forwarded to the Treasury by the first opportunity, so that no unnecessary delay may take place m the transmission of the several amounts. In these days of unpaid rates, discontinued subsidies, and financial depression generally speaking, so strikingly characteristic of local bodies administration, the amounts specified will be welcome additions to the funds of each body. Further amounts will be forwarded during the currency of the year, the sums stated being simply the advances available m conformity with the provisions of the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, to which measure we will refer more fully m a futuro issue.
