Ono of our earliest spttlern hnR sroh^ from ainonsstns m t'ho pornnn of Mr J. Bannister, of the Hollies, Johnsonvilie. Mr Bannistor's father was one of the original purchasers of land from the Nrw Zealand Company m London, m 1839, and, with his parents arrived m the colony m the Bolton m April, 1840. After being 1 m business for some years m Wellington he accompanied Mr Godfrey, m the fonnding of ttie Canterbury Settlement m 1848. In 1855he returned to Wellington and took charge of tho Crown and Anchor Hotel on his father retiring from the business. JRo was afterwnrds caterer of th^ Wellington Club for some yeara, and on the death of his father in '1871, he went to rpsido at Thft Hollies, where he died oii Thursday afternoon after a painful illness, m his sixty-third year. Mr Bannister was n member of the Johnsonville School Committee and Chairman of tho Local Board. His kiodness of heart and genial disposition Won for him many friends. He leaves a widow and daughter, nnd a brother, Mr Edwin Bannister. — Saturday's Vast.
