Building Grant. — A long discussion took place'on the matter of postponing all applications for expenditure on buildings/ ; Mr Bridge moved that there be no .further expenditure on new buildings for the .present. Mr Sanson seconded. Mr Baker asked whether that would interfere with works which were now : tendered for. Mr Bridge, m reply, said he meant that they were onl} to go on with those works to which they were bound. Mr Sanson would not second the motion after this interpretation. He understood that it was only intended to stop after the works now agreed to had been completed. The debit balance on the building account was £1347, and there was a credit . to the general account of £1796. Mr Bridge said he would alter his motion to make it read so that they tbey would, complete these contracts on hand, but enter into no other engagements. Mr Bate opposed the motion. Mr Fry moved that the discussion be adjourned till 2 o'clock. ■;- The chairman dissented . from the motion. He considered it should, be more definite, und he thought it should, read that they would only defer entering into contracts until they received notibe from the Government of the ,ainourit allocated to the Board. '•'• ~- Mr Bridge agreed to add that. Mr Stevens could not see the necessity for passing such a resolution. They .knew that new buildings would be required, and were this resolution carried, they would bo .debarred from 1 moving a step if necessary to do so. He moved that each application for new buildings be decided as it came before the Board. ' Mr Carson would supoort the amendment. He did not think there was the necessity existing now which had existed m the previous year, for stopping all works. No interference had, been made with the School Buildings Estimates m the House, and they had no reason to doubt that they would get an amount similar to that paid last year. He had less doubt this year as to how to act, because the Napier Board had found when things came to; a pinch that the Government recognised that when buildirigs were so urgently required they must pay over the money required. Although not irf that pbsition m this district lie would have no . hesitation m goin°- so far if circumstances necessitated- it. " Mr Sanson thought it was not suffimen t to. say, that the House had passed the grant, as m one previous year the building grant, had. been allowed, to lapse. Mr Bridge having replied, the Chairman ruled the amendment out of order, and Mr Stevens withdrew it. On a division the ayes were Messrs Watt, Sanson, and Bride"? ; noes : Messrs Bate, Stevens, Carson, Fry, Baker, and Ross. . . Building Committee. — The report of this committee set forth that sbme large accounts for school furniture having been placed before them, they directed, that m the stato of the Board's finances, the Inspector be instructed to observe the strictest economy, and not roepmmend to any school committee anything that can be absolutely done ; without, and not to depart from, or alter existing, contracts without reference to the Board. ' " Resolved — That Messrs Nye and Insoll, acting as relieving teachers, bo pad at the rate of .£l2O, and Miss Watson £100. The committee declined to recommend any further expenditure at the Wariganuj Infant School.. Tenders had been called for fencing part of the Boys' School Ground, and the tower at tlie Boys' School haVbeen repaired. The ! report was adopted on the motion of Mr ! Bridge, who said that he had ' noticed ' that a good deal of unauthorised ex- ! penditnre had been going on. and he ! was glad the committee had drawn attention to.it.
