THE WEST COAST TEAM.
(Herald.) Our portion of the Manawatu football team returned from Wellington on Sunday by the Huia. The ieim met the Athletics ■ on Saturday, and defeated them bj one try to nil. This try was secured by Gray towards the end of the game. On Monday last they played a Collegiate team and defeated them. In the big match with the Wellington club, the West Coast team were rather at a disadvantage, as they had not had any chance of playing together. ; Their forwards were quite as good as those on the other side, but the backs were not equal, they neglected several opportunities of collaring, and m passing their play was not up to the mark. . From what we can learn there is very little pleasure to be obtained by footballers going to the Empire City. The Wellington; men. do not seeriv inclined to extend to tbeir visitors the courtesies customary amongst athletic teams, and our West. Coast men had to run around and' arrange matches the best way they cou'cl. As for coming up this way to play their return matches, it appears that after flaying the Southern teams they consider it beneath, them to travel this. direction. It may be that they have not formed a correct opinion of the quality of our men, kt we think if they would once give it a trial they will find on this coast foemen as worthy of their steel as any m the South Island.
