In'tne House yesterday Captain Rnssel'moved to the effect that m the opinion of this House it is desirable tiint'tVie Public Works expenditure be reduced hy. a sum of not less than £500,000. He disclaimed any party spirit m making the motion, and said he should not go info any details. A long debate ensued. Sir Julius Yogel said that so far as he could see they were to take half a million off the Railway Estimates for works of construction and extension, and manufacture of rolling stock. Captain Rnssel denied that he had any wish to bring about a cessation of public works this "year, and arp-ued that it was absurd to say something could not be taken off the Estimates for roads and bridges. Major Atkinson, m referring to the East and West Coast Railway, said he considered if they were to enter into Meiggs' scheme, it would result m the bankruptcy of the' colony, which was not m a position to undertake a liability of three millions at present. He hoped the Government would take the Estimates into' their serious consideration at the present timo and reduce them within reasonable limits. The debate stands adjourned till this evening. .'■.■•■
