Auckland, Wednesday. la the Supreme Court the power of the Licensing Committee to cancel the Cosmopolitan license, on the ground that the house was not required m the neighbourhood, was challenged by the application to compel the committee to hear evidence or grant the license. Judge Gillies, without calling on the othor side for a reply, said it was clear that the committee had the power; and he over-ruled the motion with costs. At the Presbytery the Rev. T. W; Dunn appeared to explain his action m going on a lecturing tour through New Zealand when granted leave to visit his j mother m England. After hearing his explanation a resolution was carried declaring that Mr Dunn had committed an error of judgment, and requiring him to return to his charge at Pokekohe immediately. Extensive defalcations are alleged to i have been discovered m the accounts of one of the officers o± the H. and C. B. Society. He is believed to have left by the Te Anau for Sydney. At the annual meeting of the local shareholders of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, the Hon. J. Williamson and Mr (i. B. Owen were reelected colonial directors. . Charles Webster was to-day charred with the more serious offence of rape instead of indecent assault. He was remanded. The landlady of the Manakau Hotel was, at the time of the offence, m Auckland, arid the' house was m charge of the servants. . . Chhistchubch, Wednesday. A six-roomed house at Wolstbn belonging to Mr Elisha Rourd, was burnt down early yesterday morning. The eighteenth' annual exhibition m connection with the Christchurch Poultry Society was held to-day, and was the most successful show of the kind yet held ' here. The entries numbered .693, or 78 more than last year. Wellington, Thursday. Arrived Aorangi from Auckland. The diver has completed his examination of the lonic. He reports that there is not a scratch on the vessel's bottom. It is surmised that^he vessel must have struck something very soft, probably a sand bank. .;
