The New Tariff.
The members opposed to the new tariff held an adjourned meeting on Monday, when the deputation (Mr Pyke and Mr Pearson) whn had been appointed to present to the Goyerninont the resolutions passed by the meeting, reported that they had received the following note from the Premier : — "Gentlemen, — Referring ■to the resolutions adoptod at a meeting of members re the proposed tariff, which yon were good enough to hand me, I shall have much pleasure m submitting them to tho Cabinet. It is the intention of tho Government to carefully and thoroughly scrutinise the many'suggestions that ha^e been made to them before bi'in.sjing down the Customs Duties Acii, and it will be their object ,to. presß aa lightly on tho Industrial classes. as" possible, and especially not to harm our nascent industries. Thanking you personally for the courteous way m which you have submittod the .resolutions, believe me to remain, 'yours -sincerely, R. Stout." The meeting passed a vote. .of thanks to the deputation, and a resolution re-affirming members' objections to any increase to ihn tariff at the present time'; also expressed satisfaction with the Premier's assurances on the subject.
