(per united^ press association. -•■■•• Auckland, Monday. The Auckland Parliamentary Union was formally opened by Sir Frederick Whitaker to-night. There was a- good attendance, many ladies being present. The proprietors of the New Zealand Herald have purchased from Augustus Saia the copyright for New Zealand of his Australian and New Zealand letters. Napier, Monday. A meeting was held to-night to take preliminary steps towards erecting a memorial to the late Mr John Sheehan. It -waa proposed that the memorial should take the form of a drinking fountain m Olive-square. A committee was formed including men of all shades m politics, the secretary being one of Mr Ormond's chief supporters at the last election. Dunedin, Monday. At a meeting of policyholders m the Government Insurance Association about 80 were present. A motion was carried that the best interests of the Association would be conserved and its welfare promoted by the appointment of the local Boards contemplated by the Act. There were about seventeen dissentients. Tuesday. George Hagerty, storekeeper at Hindon, was killed yesterday by upsetting his dray. Hokitika, Monday. Smart shocks of earthquake were felt yesterday.
