A Woman Drowned In the Wanganui River.
A very sad case of drowning occurred in the river last night, the victim being a Mrs -Adanfeon, the wife of a baker in Hawera, who, there ia too much reason to be'ieve, has made awav with herself. Mrs Adamson arrived in town with a little daughter, some ten or twelve years old, on Saturday night, and applied to Cmstables McLennan and Grey for advice and assistance, having, she said, left lnr horn? 'through some family disturbance. The police, however, were unable to do anything for her, and yesterday afternoon she declared her intention of returning home by the train. Unfortuna^ly, she took the train to Marton by nrstake, and returned by the late train at I 1 ) o'clock. Apparently, having no friends and nowhere to go, she lost heart, and sought refuge in the river. Shortly after tlid tp*in came in, the little girl reported to the pol'ce that her mother had vimned off the wharf. Constable Mackie wis tlnn sent down to make inquiries and se irch for the body, but no trace was dia covered up to the time of our going to press. Ihe little girl is now staying at the Criterion Hotel.
