The New Steaner Mararoa.
The Union Sicamship Company has now building for it in Messrs Denny's yards at Dumbarton a steamer, which is to be the crack boat of their splendid fleet. She is to be named the Mararoa, after the lake oC that name in the Middle Island. Tn size and magnificence of appointments she is to exceed any of the other steamers, her dimensions boin<>- as follows :— Length, -320tt ; neam, 42ft ; depth of hold, 2Gt't. By way of com parison, we may say that the dimensions of the Waimnipa arc — length, 28;"> it ; beam, 30 Et ; and depth of hold, 24ft. The Mararoa will have a gross registered tonnage of 3000 tons, and a carrying capacity of 1560 tons. She will be fitted will be fitted with a refrigerating- chamber having a capacity of 80 tons, and will have a fine promenade deck, as all the boats will be raised on skids. The latest improvements in the system of electric lighting will be used throughout, and she will have compound treble expansion engines of 3000 indicated horsepower. It is expected that she will obtain a speed of 16 knots on her trial trip. The saloon will be situated amidships, as in the Wairarupa and Manapouri, and all tho fittings and appointments will be of the latest design. Hydraulic geering will bo fitted for working cargo, &c. The Mararoa is to bo finished and handed over to the company in September next, and will, it is expected arrive in the colony about the end of the year. One of the company's captains, probably either Captain Eddie or Captain Sinclair, will be sent Hrine to bring her out. She •is intond-sd'for the intercolonial trade. — Wellington paper.
