Marrow Escape of a Barque.
(united press association.) Dunedin, May 1. The barque Villalta, on her voyage from Wellington, had a narrow escape on the morning of the 30th, during a fog. Captain Thompson stood m for what he took to be the Blueskin Bay, and finding he was abreast of a lighthouse, and obtaining no response to his signals, he stood out to sea. The wind becoming light and the fog thicker, he stood m again, keeping the lead going, and he then distinguished the roar of the breakers. On hauling off, a lift m the fog revealed a bright white light instead of the red light at Taiaroa Heads, wliich he expected. The anchor was dropped. When the vessel was getting out again she had to pass on the verge of Fish Reef, and within a hundred yards of the shore, and her position was almost hopeless m consequence of the light wind.
