The Manawatu Railway Company.

An extraordinary general meeting of the above Company was held at the Chamber of Commerce at noon on Tuesday, there being a large number of.shareholders present. Mr J. E. Nathan, Chairman of Directors, occupied the chair. The business of the meeting was the election of three Directors, m place of Messrs J. E. Nathan, W.H. Levin, and J. Linton. Messrs Nathan and Levin offered themselves for re-election, but Mr Linton had retired. Messrs. J. Kirkcaldie, J. B. Harcourt, W. H. Levin and J- E. Nathan were proposed, and the show of hands resulted as follows : — Mr Levin 22, Mr Nathan 17, Mr Kirkcaldie 11,. Mr Harcourt 9. On the demand of Mr Quick a poll was held m the afternoon, Messrs Stuart and Powles officiating as scrutineers. The following was the result : — ;. ' W. H. Levin... 2177 J. The Chairman referred to the negotiations being carried on with the Government for the sale of the railway. If the sale took place the shareholders would have no reason to regret the investment. In order, however, to provide for the eventuality of the sale not being effected, the Directors thought it a wise thing that they should have power to increase the capital ot the Company. • In answer to Mr Binns, the Chairman stated that it was proposed to double the capitalMr George Fisher asked whether the Directors had unanimously arrived at the decision to sell the railway. The Chairman declined to answer the question, stating that it was unusual to go into such details at a public meeting. During the afternoon a poll was'taken on the question of' empowering the Directors to increase the capital of the Company. The result . was that 2470 votes wore recorded m favor of the increase and none against it.
