Supposed Foundering of the Cable Steamer Mrguetic.

LOSS OF ALL HANDS FEARED.

A NEW ZEALAND TELEGBAPH OFFICER ON BOARD.

It will be remembered that about a fortnight ago information was published to the effect that the Eastern Extension Cable Company repairing steamer Magnetic was overdue, and that there waa very grave fears for her safety. To Mr W. Gray, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, wej are indebted for further intormation, which leaves but little doubt that the Magnetic has foundered with all on board. A cable received states that the captain ot the Cunard Liner Palmyra reports that, while crossing the Bay 6f Biscay, and when about 200 miles north of Cape Finisterre he picked up the life-boat of- the Magnetic. The little craft was complete with mast and oars, but there was ho sign of any sails, neither was was there any evidence of the boat having been occupied. Shortly after tbe Magnetic left London on her trip to Australia yerv heavy gales were experienced on the English coast and it is surmised that the ill-fated vessel was caught m one of these storms and was unablo to live through it. The Magnetic was coming to Australian •waters to relieve the cable-repairing ■teamer Agnes. The misring vessel was larger than the Agnes. No other particulars are, however, to Hand. .We (Post) regret to learn that Mr Shepjey, formerly of the cable station Wakapuaka and latterly at Le Perouse, New Soafch Wales, was a passenger by the vessel.
