Bishop Redwood left ,by the steamer Ruapehu thia evening for England, en route for Europe. His sudden departure is somewhat of a surprise, and the nature of his business has not yet been disclosed. The Rev. leather Macnamara has been appointed to the charge of the diocese during the Bishop's absence.. The Government this afternoon received a telegram from Otaki stating that a large man-of-war was in sight off there. She was standing east, evidently bound to Wellington, and should that be bo she should arrive here to-night or to-morrow morning. The vessel is believed to be H.M.S. Espiegle, which left Australia under sealed orders a few days ago. At the Supreme Court this afternoon the slander case Goldsmith v. Anderson was partly heard. The claim is for £500 damages. It is alleged that defendant had said Goldsmith had offered the joo* key of a horse, in a private match at the New Year's meeting, £20 to pull him. It will be resumed to-morrow. The steamer Ruapehu sailed for London at 5.45 this evening. Auckland, April 13. Isaac Yates, of Hamilton, was the successful tenderer for the Punui railway, the amount being J. Allom, a jockey, while riding Alaska on the Takapuna racecourse last week training, got thrown and died from concussion of the brain. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. In the case at the criminal sessions of Eobert Prendergast, for wife murder at Pokenp, the jury retuaned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to inerev, on the ground of previous insanity. The prisoner said nothing in defense save that he was sorry he did not kill the man, meaning Buohanan, of whom he was jealous.
