POLITICAL NEWS.

THE PREMIER AT AUCKLAND, (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, April 13. The Premier addressed a public meet* ing at the Theatre Royal to-night, under the auspices of the Auckland Liberal Association. There was a large attendance. Among those on the platform were Sir F. Whitaker, Hon. W. Swan* son, Messrs Thompson, Hamlin, Dargaville, M.H.R's.,ineinbers of the Liberal Association, and a number of representa* tive citizens. The Mayor presided. On the Premier making his appearance on the platform he was received with cheers which were renewed when he com. menced his address. The leading topics of his speech were— Fostering technical education ; the land question ; advocating perpectual leasing of unsold Crown lands; forest conservation; maintenance of higher education, as well as primary education, in the interest of bright but poor young men of the State, without regard to race, nationality, or caste, and secularism of the State and of education. The realisator of these ideals would promote true national lite and prosperity. He concluded an hour and a quarter's address amidst great cheering. Mr J. Shera moved, moved, and Mr D. H. McKeuzie seconded, a vote of hearty thanks to the Premier for his address, whioh was carried unanimously amidst cheers.
