Our Volunteers.
[Feilding Star] ' On Tuesday night the railway station was illuminated with torches to recei ye the Manchester and Paltnerstou Rifles on their return from the Easter Encampment at Nelson. There was a large crowd of people m attendance, <and among them we observed a number of members who had been unable to accompany their comrades on their trip The train drew alongside the platform to the sweet air " Home sweet Home" by the band. The corps had also provided themselves with torches which were lighted before the train reaohed Feilding and these had a grand effect, lighting up the train m a novel manner. The men were quickly extrained and formed into line' on the platform. Captain Macarthur called for three cheers for Captain Carroll and his brother officers. Captain Carroll then stepped from the carriage and called for cheers from the Palraerston men for their Feilding brethren. These weregiven with a gusto that threatened to rise the roofs off the carriages. . Special cheers were given for the individual officers, and for the band, and last but not least for "the big drum." It is needless to say that the men were all m the best of good humour. As the train moved away from the platform, taking away the Palmerston Rifles, the band again struck up " Home sweet Home," while, the passengers almost drowned it by the loudness of their adieus. The two i corps are highly pleased with each other, and we feel certain that the warm feelings of mutual respect and esteem engendered by a few days service m the " mimic field of war," will have a lasting effect, and tend to strengthen that bund of union which should exist between the two townships.
