Railway Management.

[Patea MaiX\ When reluming from Hawera on the day of the Egmont race meeting, a somewhat warm argument was carried on between two passengers m the car, on the subject of tho fairness of the charges made by the Railway Department on that particular day. Tho party who considered himself hardly dealt with hailed trom Waitotara, while' his fellow debater hailed from Wanganui, and m order to enable our 'rentiers' to thoroughly understand the casiis belli, they must call to their mind the fact that from Wunganui to Haw era if, according to the mileage column of the railway timetable, 53 miles, and the distance from Waitotiira to Hawera 34 miles, or 19 miles less than the distance from Wanganui, but oa compaiing notes our friend from Wailotftia found that he had been charged Is 3d more tor his his fare than the individual who hailed from Wan»anui,.so that because he travelled 33 mile« less m the train than his Wanganui friend, tJterefore he had to pay Is 3d more. This result would haidly work out by any nrdi- . nary arithmetical process — save N.Z.R. practise — and by the same method it was found" that given the mileage from Wanganui to Hawera at 53, and the mileage from New Plymouth to Hawera at 48, theu because the fare from Wanganui was Bs, therefore fche fare from New Plymouth must be 123- 6d, the rate charged. We were told at school that " there is no analogy m the English language," and we are inclined to think. that the railway tariff is m about the same box, and is certainly equally dilßcult for the uninitiated to underdtand.
