Earl Granville has approved of the action of Sir Peter Lumsden, British Commissioner, m advising the Afghans to resist the Kussian advance. Russia professes a Pacific attitude m the matter. The frozen meat ex Orient steamer Austral has arrived \a good condition. The inhabitants of Kassala were reduced to great straits through famine before the town fell into the hands of the rebels. General Grover Cleveland was installed as President of the United States today. ; The native troops m Hyderabad, Bhoi pal, Patriala, and Jheend volunteer for service m the Soudan. The annexation of the territory adjacent to Zanzibar ousts the Glasgow Colonising Company, who previously occupied it. A new Governor has been appointed to succeed Lord Augustus Loftus as Governor of New South Wales, but has name has not yet been disclosed. It is, however, understood that he occupies a high position, and is wealthy. One hundred and eighty thousand salmon ova is to be shipped for New Zealand by the Shaw-Savill and Albion Company's steamer Arawa. The German Government intend to colonise that portion of New Guinea recently annexed by them. The London Chamber of Commerce have appointed a committee to confer with the various shipowners with regard to bills of lading. The cargo of frozen meat by the steamer Arawa is m splendid condition. Should any of Murdoch's cricketing team visit England next year they will be excluded from the Lords and Oval grounds, and probably from Nottingham. March 5. Court Herbert Bismarck, acting under > Secretary of State, is parleying with Lord Granville. The Very Eev Canon Walsh, D.T>., % President of Maynooth College, will succeed the late Aschbishop McCabe as Archbishop of Dublin.
