Wanganui Education Bord.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday, when there were present — Messrs Watt (chair), Sanson, Bridge, Baker, Bey. Boss, Bate, Taplin, Carson, and Fry. Appointments Committe. — The following business was done m Committee : — Halconihe ; Miss Schofield, assistant, applied for leave of absence for 3 months on account of ill-health. Referred to the Board. — Bulls ; Rockel was .appointed a cadet pending the receipt of the March returns, — Aorangi : Letter stating that the committee had appointed two cadets. Sanson: Letter stating that the assistant was not at school during the first week of opening. — Referred to the Board. — Foxton: Miss Howan, .assistant,: ill. Letter received. — Otaki : Norman Crabb was appointed a pupil teacher for Otaki. — Bulls : Resignation of Miss McDonald accepted : her name to be retained ; vacancy to be dealt with by ihe. Kimbolton Road (Feilding) School.— A deputation waited on tho Board the above schools, and the dismissal of the teacher, Mr Templar.— After full.discussion, ifc was resolved to hold the matter over till the April meeting. >>' Committee's Report.— The £20 house allowance at Moutoa to be continued during during; the Board's pleasure, instead of repairing the residence. As soon as the Inspector has completed his present standard examinations, he was to furnish the Secretary with a list ot teachers whose schools have not shewn : satisfactory results; and that thereupon, the Secretary write to them intorming them that unless better results ; are obtained at the next examination they would receive three months' notice of dismissal. — The report was adopted. Building and Finance Committee.— The committee reported that they, accepted the tender of Carrorand Brosselman (£206) for the erection of residence at Parawanui. They also resolved- 3o recommend to the Board that.in every case where a teacher was late m resuming duty after the vacation (except upon medical certificate or. permission front the Board) the amount of salary due for such time be forfeited. — Report adopted. Taonui. — Mr Sanson reported that he had visited the school, and, with some of the committee,' looked at the chimney from the eaves to the gable end. The school also wanted a porch for the boys. He moved that the Board vote pound for pound up to £15 towards the extension of the porch, and £10 for the. chimney. Feilding. — Mr Fry reported that as to the extension of the playground, thereto found that it would cost £1661 Although it would be advantageous to have it, he could not recommend the expenditure. Report. adopted.-r-Stanwayr^Mr Sanson reported that he had seen some of the committee who had put up a lot of fencing required, and they would 1 put up the shed. They asked that the Board would allow them to spend the balance of the £22 m gravel. Agreed .ifo. „£. T. Supernumerary Teachers. — Resolved, That three supernumerary •• teachers be appointed at a salary of £5 per month. Free Railway Tickets.— Letter from the Department directing attention to the Gazette notice permitting school children to travel free on the railways. Taonui. — Mr Sanson moved, That the board give £1 for £1, not to exceed £15, for a porch, and a sum not to, exceed £10 for a chimney. '*' "ii"-tjh Applications for Grants. — A mass of correspondence, containing applications for grants of money for improvements, were referred to finance committee, to report at next meeting. Awahuri. — Mr Rees Mpgg, the teaches at this place having been engaged at a a salary ef £140 per annum, under tlie impression that he held a certificate, it was resolved to pay him at that rate for the first quarter, and then give him three months' notice, unless he succeeds m getting a certificate. V, Desks. — The Inspector was authorised to produce necessary desks for certain schools. ' ■•'■'■■ Calisthenics.— lnspector authorised to report at next meeting on cost of necessary appliances for calisthemo exercises.
