Election Petition.
WITNESSES EVADING BUB. POENAS.
(t'NITED PKKBS ASSOCIATION.) Reefton, Feb. 28. The county election petition again the return of Patrick Br'ennan '"for the riding of Reefton came on for the second hearing m the Resident Magistrate's. Coflrt on Saturday last, and 15 or 20 additional witnesses were examined for the petitioners, nearly the whole ot whom were miners from Boatmans. Evidence was given to show that thirteen witnesses for the petitioners were evading service. The police and bailiff having beta un» able to effect the service of the.-subpoenaa and also the warrants which will subsequently be issued against the parties. An adjournment was granted to the petitioners, the Resident Magistrate say* ing that he would not allow the processes of the Court to be defied and treated with contempt, and if the police force m the district was insufficient to execute the warrants, application would have to be made to the Inspector of Police for additional assistance. The case creates great interest locally, and is costing the electors petitioning a heavy amount.
