A Native Agitator.
It will be recollected (says, the New/, Zealand Herald) that some time ago some letters .on the treatment of the Maoris by the colonists were published m the London papers, written by " J. R. Mcßeth," -of Wellington; ; ; • The Secretary; ■of State fop: the Colonies forwarded the letters to nis Excellency the Governor, and . Mr B_ryoe, . jWho. was then , ,Nat^ye ilinister had to' write an elaborate answer. The Maoris took notice of this champion who was setting forth their •'grievances', m Ithe metropolitan press. They sent to Wellington for him, and had him present at a meeting m the KingCountry. When Tawhiao's visit to England was projected, Mcßeth who is a young man, came 'to Aucktand and Was desirous df accompanying the party. They would have taken him, but he was useless as an intrepreter, and the Maoris werd" afraid that their funds would not be sufficient. tytcßeth was, therefore left m Auckland, where he has teeri residing ever since. For some time he has been m a; destitute cpnditiqn* ;.H© spent a considerable portion of each day m the Free Library and 'constant complaints were made to the librarian of'ras condition. Mr Shillington requested him to keep away, but he ■ persisted m coming back, and on Monday he 1 was arrested'as a vagrant. He was brought up the same day, and remanded till yesterday, morning. On being brought up yesterday, tho bench discharged him, on his promising to clear out of town before' tomorrow. '•
