"WEDNESDAY NIGHT. Tho ordinary meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council was held on. Wednesday night. Present — CrsXinton I (Mayor), J. King, Larcomb, Bentley, T. , King, Hawkins, Huteheson, West, and I Park. | CORRESPONDENCE. ', The following correspondence was j •considered : — ,• j From the Manawatu lioad Board asking the Council . to arrange with its Public 'Works Committee, for an interview with the board's Engineer, Mr E. J. Armstrong, with respect to relieving the Kawau creek of the storm water. Referred to Works Committee. From J. Jessop, informing the Council that Jarnos McEwen had progressed favorably towards recovery up to last Tuesday when the symptoms of his disease showed signs of returning and the '< doctor being called m he pronounced McEwen 1 s case as bad as over, and oorr r dered wine for the patient also a blanket which latter had been furnished. Mr Jessop asked the Council for authority to supply wine, also enclosed his account for attendance amounting to £6 13s. Cr J. King moved that the matter be referred back to the Charitable, Aid Committee. • . Seconded by Cr Huteheson and carlied. . . : ' .' ■ From L. G. West, asking thef Council for payment of the current year's contribution of i'Bo towards the support of the Pahners.ton Fire Brigade. ' *■•' > .-.} Cr T. King proposed that the. sum : of i'3o be granted as a contribution towards the Fire Brigade as previously promised by the Council. . • Seconded by Cr West: ' Cr Park pointed out that there, were no funds at present to meet the expends ture. i \ ; ; Cr Hawkins moved an aimndment that the ; matjter be deferred jtill April next when the Financial Statement would be dealt with. '. . .".'■ Seconded by Cr Park. ..j: ..: J Cr Hawkins said that he did not wish it to bo understood that ho opposed the payment of the i'3o but he should wish ,to give the Brigade even moro than that sum. when tho Council had the funds. Cr J. King urged the Council -to pay the Jd'6o when funds were available to show the Brigade that there' was no breach of faith on the part of tho Council. . ... ' The original motion was carried.. From Borough Solicitor re cabstands. Cr J. King suggested that this matter be referred to the Borough Solicitor with instructions to draw up a short bye-law dealing with tho subiect. Matter left m abeyance to bo further dealt with by the Council. From clerk of the Licensing Committee asking that the necessary steps be taken by the Council for Election of the Incensing Committee for tho Borouch Lieens- , ing. District and notifying that a meeting for election of Chairman would beheld on 17th' March 1885 at Court House at /noon. ' :.,::; Cr Bentley proposed, and Cr T, King seconded that the Town Clerk be appointed Returning Officer.— -Carried. . From .John P. Armstrong, forwarding preliminary report relative to the proposed water supply scheme. The report ' stated that he estimated the cost of proposed Water Supply at £25, 000 from a Main Reservoir and £SWQ from an open race. . ■ ...!■.■-"' On the motion of. C. Grahajj. PUBLJG WORKS COMMITTEE. . The following minutes of meeting held on the 15th January -vyere read and adopted. Present : Crs West (chairman), Wylds, and Hutchison. Tenders for painting Pound Board received as under Jas. Jolly, 2 Boards, i£6 ; Win. Dixon, 1. Board, ill 10s; H. j. Harbott, 1 Board, £ii ss. Resolved that tho tender of H. J. Harbott be accopted. • Mr G. Powell's account for fencing was considered. Resolved, " That the account be certi- . lied to when tho battens on top be more thoroughly nailed. : CHRATIULE AID COMMITTEE. The following minutes of the meeting held on 10th January were read and adopted. ' Present : Crs T. King, and Wm. Park. . Tho certificate from' Dr Marriner stating that J. MeEwen was a fit .subject tor the Hospital was read, also telegrams from the authorities of same declining to receive him owing to want of accomodation and the , infectious nature of his disease. ■"■■■'• i ■ Resolved— That J. Jessop be emploj'ed to look afper McEwen and be paid 8s per diem and also to supply him, with cooked food. If found necessary blankets to be provided., and medical attendance to be procured,
The minutes of the Committee at a wootiiij; huLl on Jan. 10, were read and adopted. Present : Crs T. Kin?, L. G.West, W. Park. The case of Mrs O'Brien was considered, she having applied for, assistance m consequence of her husband being committed to gaol for two months. Resolved — That rations bo supplied to the oxUmfc of .£1 per week and that con- , stable Manning be requested to dispense the same, failing him, the Foreman of "Works to undertake the matter. liorfolveil — That the Ml per week aid to Mrs O'Brien be continued for another i fortnight. , ._. GENKRAL. Cr Park said that a complaint had boon made to him that the poundkeeper could not bo found by" a person who had | repeatedly endeavored to see the poundkeeper to release a horse impounded. The Clerk to enquire into the matter. Proposed by Cr Hawkins and seconded by Cr West— That Crs J. ; King and Bentley be empowered to purchase another horse and dray and also a cheap hack for the use of the Corporation officials. Carried. , Cr T. King proposed' that an Order papor be prepared for each meeting so that Councillors would have to put matters they wished to speak about m writing the day before the meeting. Besolved-^That the Town Clerk be authorised to sign coupons for Borough ban.. • . .,, . Cr AVest proposed , jthat the Public Works Committee take steps for con-, tinuance of culvert m Botanical Eoad 'from 1 College-street to Ferguson -street balling ten tiers for same and letting the work at such time that the payments be . not due until the latter part of ApriL Seconded by Cr J. King and carried. The Council then adjourned.
