The Sandwich Islands.
— ■ ■ ♦ In its notice to correspondents, the Auckland Herald of a recent date has the following : — E; Chas. H. Haultain, Hunterville, near Marton, writes : — " 1. Having a desire to go to the Sandwich Islands, would you oblige by informing me as to the report which we hear about the King ot the Sandwich Islands ? 2. What inducement is offered? There are a good number, including myself who are willing to go." — 1. As you have not stated the nature of the report you have heard 'respecting the King of the Sandwich Islands, we are unable to say whether it is true or no, as we do not ! know the character of the report you have heard. 2. There are no special m- ' ducements held out for any white person to go to the Sandwich Islands ; and unless a man possessed a good deal of capital to engage m sugar or coffee growing, and thus employ coloured labour, there is no prospect of doing so well m the Sandwich Islands as m New Zealand. In the fields, m a tropical country, a white man -would not be able to compete with Chinese and Indian coolies m point of wages. Coloured labour will always be cheaper than white labour, and will thus be m demand on sugar and coffee growing estates.
