Bank Notes and Erysipelas.
• I (To the editor of the Wanganui Herald) Sib, — In your issue of Saturday, I noticed a paragraph referring to theiprevalenoe of the disease erysipelas imour district. Being intinatcly acquainted with a recent sufferer from this disease, I may be permitted to refer to a probable medium of its contagion. I allude to dirty Bank notes. A short time ago my friend was engaged m counting and assorting a number cf Bank notes, the smell from which was very offensive, and irritated his nostrils considerably. A few days after this occurred erysipelas showed itself, surrounding the organ which had been so irritated. It was therefore naturally inferred that the Bank notes m question had beon the medium of communicating the disease ; if not they must certainly have accelerated it had there been predisposition. lam not alone m Ascribing the probability of disease beingpropagatedthrough the medium of Bauk notes, as a few weeks ago I read a short article m a country newspaper upon the subject, m which the writer showed, with some reason, that the filthy Bank notes now m circulation have a tendency towards spreading disease. I trust the time is not distant when one of our health authorities will give the subject some promiuence with a view of compelling our Banks to renew their notes at short periods. — I am, &c, Pro Bono Pdblico. Wanganui, Dec. 29th.
