A LESSON FOR THE FUTURE.
The Marton people appear to have made a regular hash- of their waterworks scheme. First they got a loan of some <£cJOOO, of i which they sunk m the borough ! well, never having reached water, and a further <£400 m liabilities with regard to their present scheme,, and now they ask the ratepayers to raise a further loan of dt J ISOO. When Palmerston goes m for waterworks it' should take a lesson by the expeiience of Marton and avoid landing itself m a fix similar to that which the last mentioned unhappy town is now bewailing. The only argument that the Marton local journal can urge why the ratepayers should sanction another loan is that some time or other Marton may be the junction of the Auckland railway route ! It would appear that Marton would be all the better of more independent and outspoken journalistic censorship than it now possesses, and that dasideratim, if certain negotiations that we hear are now pending have a satisfactory consummation it is probable will be supplied before the end of the present year. Meanwhile Marton and its waterworks scheme are frequently used as a metaphor wherewith to point a moral or adorn tale.
