POLICE ADMINISTRATION.

Some time ago the Woodville Examiner criticised adversely the administration of the Hawkes Bay Police Department. The Napier Telegraph took up the cudgels on the other side, and suggested the possibility of the Woodville paper being m for a libel suit. Our Woodville contemporary replies as follows :— -**■ Major Scully might be Inspector of police or he might not, so far as we are concerned. We have been dealing all along with the administration of the Police Department, and with the manner m which its duties have been conducted by the official head of the district, who may be Major ' Kumfoozlum ' for all it matters to us. All we have said m regard to the official administration of the department we are prepared to prove, and if the Inspector is foolish enough to bring a libel action, we shall be only too glad to have the promised opportunity of exposing the system of the department extending over a period of years. There is a rare lot of ♦' dirty linen " to be washed, and the evidence we shall bring forward will show how

necessary is the reform m the department we have advocated. The department is one of the most important of public services, and the inspectors who administer the police districts draw their salaries from the public purse, and we are quite justified m critic.sing their conduct, especially m a case of this kind, where we can bring abundant and conclusive evidence.
