Fortnightly Steam Service.

(united pekss association.) Auckland, Sept. 10. Mv Coster, M.H.R., managing director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, is at. present on a visit to this ciiy, and on private business. This morning at the request of the Cnainber of Commerce, ho met the committee ot lhat association for the purpose of talkiug over the matter of the direct steam service and shipping matters generally. Mr Coster,in reply to a question, said there would soon be a fortnightly service of direct steamers between England and New Zealand, the Shipping Company itself having five swift and perfectly appointed vessels. The faot that the company had only asked for an alternative mail service showed that they recognised the importance of keeping up the San Francisco service. He also pointed out that the charges at the port ot Auckland were larger than at other potts, and strongly advocated that no portage should be charged ou direct steamers. The committee will roporb on the in'ain points of the conference to the chamber.
