SPORTING ITEMS.
A new sporting aud dramatic paper, to be called the New Zealand Referee, is announced to appear in Christohurch on Friday next. It is to be edited liy Mr A. E, Bird, better known as " Sir Launceiot," and is to be published weekly. How have the mighty fallen ! Mala, the hero of two Dunedin Cups, the favourite for the Melbourne Cup of 1880, and the winner of countless great events in New Zealand, appeared yesterday at the Dunedin Birthday Races as a competitor in a selling race. We are glad to say he won, but his performance cannot have been considered ve.xy grand, as he fetched at auction the paltry price of £41, at which he was knocked down to Mr Pilbrow. If Mata were an entire instead of a gelding, he would be worth at the present moment something like £1000. Bell's Life, the oldest English sporting paper, has been reduced in price to one penny, and will in future be published twice a week. The meeting of the Victorian Coursing 01 ub was concluded on Saturday. The Hon. W. B. Rouuswell's Rob Roy won the Dei by, and Mr A. Bell's Laura, the Oaks.
