The Jewish Kabbi has applied to the City School Committee that Jewish children might leave the shools at 3.30 on Wednesday afternoons, to ensure their attendance at the Synagogue for Hebrew instruction. The committee considered that instruction in Hebrew might embrace " religious instruction," and the application was refused, on the ground that any other clergyman might make a similar request with some object repuguant to the Education Act. A Ladies> Comtnitte, 50 strong, has beon formed in connection with the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, under the patronage of Miss Jei'vois, with Miss Whitaker as secretary. The honorary veterinary surgeon of the society, Mr Jones,, was victim of a dastardly assault last night by a cabman, Geo. Cook, who is to be piosecuted. I Greymouth, May 25. A man named Hichard Griblin, with several alliases, who is undei remand for issuing a false cheque at Oamaru, made a bold attempt to| escape this morning while in the yard. He cleared the fence, and a most ex- , citing chase was the result, lots of the townspeople joining in the hue and cry. He was at last run to earth under a private residence. He will be remanded to Oamaru, a warrant for his apprehension having arrived.
